On March 14, Korean media reported that the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM), a subsidiary of the Ministry of Science and ICT, successfully developed the world's first distortion-free, stretchable Micro LED display technology (Meta- display technology), the display unit can be stretched by up to 25% without distorting the image.
The technique, developed by a research team led by Jang Bong-kyun, a senior researcher in the Department of Nanomechanics at KIMM, is now published in the peer-reviewed journal Advanced Functional Materials.
It is understood that what the KIMM research team has developed is a 3-inch Micro LED display that will not cause image display distortion even if it is stretched in a given direction, which is achieved by using metamaterials (Metamaterials) design and manufacturing technology , this metamaterial is an artificial composite material with unique mechanical properties that do not exist in nature, and is said to have broad application prospects in electromagnetic fields such as antennas, electromagnetic stealth, and metalens.
According to reports, most stretchable materials in nature, such as rubber, shrink in width when stretched longitudinally, resulting in image distortion, and this is currently the case for stretchable displays based on rubber.
The KIMM research team applied mechanical metamaterials with negative Poisson's ratio effects to circuit boards. Poisson's ratio refers to the ratio of width shrinkage when a material is stretched longitudinally. When a mechanical metamaterial with a Poisson's ratio of -1 is stretched longitudinally, it exhibits the effect of stretching transversely at the same ratio. Therefore, using Displays of this material are characterized by undistorted images.
Korean media said that the newly developed flexible meta-display technology is expected to be applied to electronic devices, such as mobile phones and tablet computers. This Micro LED meta-display technology can also be applied to human skin without any wrinkles, so it is expected to be used in medical devices. , beauty and health care and other fields have been applied.
